The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Al Qubah is a 2025 release from Ard Al Zaafaran, a house whose catalogue leans heavily on Arabian perfumery tradition while regularly incorporating more contemporary compositions. Al Qubah continues that thread but widens the frame in a noticeable way. The composition draws from a broad aromatic vocabulary: bergamot and grapefruit open the fragrance with a sharp, cold brightness, lavender and sage follow to add an aromatic backbone that stretches the top into something more herbal and complex. Then comes an unexpected heart: suede, fir balsam, geranium, and pineapple, a combination that bridges sweet, resinous, and green in a way few compositions manage.
The unusual move here is the pineapple. Dropping pineapple into the heart alongside fir balsam and geranium creates a sweet-aromatic tension that keeps the suede from feeling like a costume piece. The pineapple flashes briefly before the suede and fir balsam take over, and the combination of soft, almost powdery leather with the cool, resinous bite of fir produces a heart that is both inviting and slightly unsettling. It's a structure that filters the saffron-lavender combination through a more restrained lens, with less sugar and more green, more aromatic backbone.
The evolution
The opening is all cold brightness. Bergamot and grapefruit hit sharp at first contact, almost bracing, then lavender and sage stretch the opening out into something more herbal and aromatic. Saffron threads underneath from the very beginning, warming the whole top without tipping it sweet or syrupy. The saffron is present but never overwhelming, a slow ember rather than a blaze. As the top notes soften, pineapple makes a quick appearance in the heart, bright and almost like a flash of cocktail garnish, before suede and fir balsam take over. This is where the fragrance finds its center, and it tends to linger. The resinous, slightly leathery quality of the fir-and-suede combo holds the composition together through the middle stretch of wear, giving the fragrance a grounded, contemplative quality that contrasts with the brighter opening.
Cultural impact
Among fragrance communities, Al Qubah draws occasional comparisons to other saffron-lavender compositions, with some wearers noting that the green, resinous fir and oakmoss elements push it toward a cooler, more forest-like territory than many of its peers. Several reviewers have remarked on the unusual combination of pineapple and suede in the heart, with reactions mixed: some find it adds a welcome brightness and a sense of playfulness to what could otherwise be a heavier composition, while others find the pineapple reads sharp or slightly out of place against the fir and suede.
