The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Michel Roudnitska designed Wood Of Life as an olfactory study in transformation. The name is not metaphorical, the fragrance actually changes shape over time, refusing to stay in any single register. Released in 2017 as part of Anima Vinci's debut collection, the composition draws on a perfumer's instinct to build something that rewards patience rather than announcing itself at first breath. The brief, as it were, was to capture something living: the energy of green growth, the warmth of heartwood, the persistence of roots. What emerged is a fragrance with a genuine arc, not just a sequence of notes, but a structure that thinks.
The structure is unusual: a top accord built on Thai ginger and mint creates immediate intensity, a green-aromatic spike that most perfumers would soften or sweeten. Instead, Roudnitska lets it stand, then layers in warmth, hedione's transparent jasmine, ylang-ylang's creamy depth, rose and clove, before anchoring everything in a base of sandalwood, vetiver, and leather. The result is a fragrance that moves from sharp to soft to warm, each phase earned by what came before. It's a composition designed to be worn, not just sampled.
The evolution
The opening is the test. Mint and Thai ginger arrive together, cool and hot, herb and spice, backed by a sharp citrus blend of bergamot, grapefruit, and mandarin. It's an assertive introduction, the kind that makes you check if you put on too much. You didn't. Around twenty minutes in, the green edge softens as hedione and rose emerge, ylang-ylang adding a tropical creaminess that tames the sharpness. The cinnamon and clove in the heart arrive quietly, building warmth rather than announcing it. By hour three, the drydown takes over: sandalwood and vetiver ground everything, leather and vanilla emerge from the base to create something unexpected, a soft, warm presence that lingers close to the skin for hours. On fabric, the sandalwood and musk can last into the next day.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Wood Of Life has found its audience among wearers who trust the journey, those who apply and wait rather than judge immediately. It's the fragrance for someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves. The scent has become a quiet standard for those who appreciate transformation over immediate impact.
