The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'oud is a 2024 creation from perfumer David Magalhães for Amberfig. The name does double duty: it nods to oud the material and to loud, the volume knob. The brief was to build an oud with pulse and swagger rather than the meditative, temple-style oud that dominates the genre. To pull that off, Magalhães turned to Buaya oud, a natural white oud with more woody than animalic facets, less barnyard, more burnished wood. The result sits in Amberfig's Ed. Limitadas collection, a line devoted to limited releases that explore more demanding raw materials. What's interesting is how the composition reads as oud from the first contact with skin, and how that initial woody heat keeps its energy well into the early hours before settling.
Buaya is the quiet structural decision that makes the whole composition legible. It's a natural white oud that retains the wood, the dryness, the faintly resinous snap, without leaning on the more aggressive facets of the material. Paired with saffron's leathery bite at the top, it announces itself as oud within the first ten minutes, without forcing the wearer to defend the choice. Cashmeran does the rest, wrapping the drydown in a soft, skin-close musk that gives woody fragrances their intimate, second-skin quality.
The evolution
The opening belongs to saffron, and the saffron here is not the polite, expensive-thread version. It comes in hot, leathery, almost cured, like the smell of a new wallet left in a warm car. The oud arrives not as a slow build but as a shift, the saffron retreating just enough for the Buaya's woody character to take the floor. Sandalwood joins shortly after, creamy but not sweet, sitting under the oud like a bass line. The composition eventually locks into its long middle: oud, sandalwood, cashmeran, all three braided together, the cashmeran lending that slight metallic fuzz that keeps the whole thing from going smooth. As the hours pass, the projection gradually pulls in closer, moving from a room-filling presence to something more personal, a scent that sits on the skin rather than projecting outward.
Cultural impact
L'oud engages with oud as a material with a long history in perfumery, and the choice to build a 2024 composition around a natural white oud like Buaya reflects ongoing interest in presenting oud through drier, more wearable constructions. By naming the release in French and centering Buaya white oud, Amberfig connects a globally traded luxury ingredient with its own framing of the material, one that prioritizes wood and dryness over density.
The House
AmberfigAmberfig occupies a distinctive space in contemporary perfumery, presenting itself as a niche fragrance house with a collaborative approach to creation. The brand emerged in 2014, making it a relatively young player in a field that includes houses with centuries of history, yet it has built a catalog spanning over a decade with releases that range from 2015 through 2026. The name Amberfig itself suggests a signature aesthetic rooted in warm, resinous materials alongside green or fruity facets, though the house has demonstrated range across multiple fragrance families. According to fragrance databases, Amberfig has produced at least ten distinct releases, with perfumers credited as collaborators rather than house perfumers, suggesting a model that brings in external expertise for individual projects. The brand appears to operate without the extensive media presence of established heritage houses, instead building recognition through its olfactory offerings and community discussion. This positioning reflects a broader trend in niche perfumery where smaller, more experimental houses can reach global audiences without traditional retail infrastructure.
