The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name gives it away. Tonkalmond is a portmanteau, tonka and almond, the two notes that anchor the entire composition. Amberfig worked with perfumer David Magalhães to build something the brand describes as encorpado without being suffocating. A body without weight. A warmth that breathes. Released in 2019, the fragrance translates that ambition into a pyramid that starts sweet and never really lets go.
What makes Tonkalmond work is the interplay between powder and sweetness in the heart. Iris carries that classic soapy, powdery register, the kind that smells like expensive soap in a guest bathroom. Jasmine Sambac adds a tropical, slightly indolic richness that stops the iris from going too austere. The honey doesn't sweeten the composition so much as it rounds the edges, binding the powder to the sweet. Tonka bean absolute then amplifies the almond from the opening, turning it into something warmer, more resinous, less marzipan, more amaretto.
The evolution
The opening is fast. Within seconds, almond and cinnamon arrive together, not as two separate notes taking turns, but as a single warm impression. The spice doesn't sharpen so much as it steadies, keeping the nuttiness from floating away. Ten minutes in, the honey emerges. It sweetens the deal without making it sticky. The iris follows shortly after, adding that powdery, slightly soapy layer that keeps the whole thing from reading like a dessert. The jasmine sambac is the quiet one, present in the pyramid, subtle on skin, it threads through the middle to prevent the composition from flattening. By the time the base arrives, vanilla, benzoin, tolu balsam, the fragrance has shifted from edible warmth to something more resinous and close. The benzoin acts like a fixative glue, stretching everything forward. The tolu balsam adds a faint balsamic resin quality that smells like the inside of a wooden drawer. This is where Tonkalmond earns its longevity. The drydown on fabric is the giveaway: vanilla and warm resin, still going strong the next morning.
Cultural impact
Tonkalmond occupies a specific lane: sweet, warm, and unapologetically cozy without tipping into heavy. The fragrance enjoys a loyal following among those who want warmth they can wear daily, earning respect from enthusiasts for its approachable character. Its closest companion in the Amberfig catalog is Vive La Fête, both share the honey-vanilla-almond triad, though Tonkalmond leans more powdery through the iris. The fragrance performs best in fall and winter, where its sweetness reads as intentional warmth rather than seasonal mismatch.
