The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Crystal Oud arrived in 2014 as part of ALYSONOLDOINI's debut collection, developed with Benoist Lapouza of Fragrance Resources. The brief was clear: take Indonesian oud, sustainably sourced, a house commitment, and give it an Italian register. Lapouza reached for lemon, rhubarb, and black pepper to lead. The contrast between sharp citrus and deep resinous wood became the fragrance's spine.
The white truffle in the heart is what sets this apart from most oud fragrances. Truffle, an ingredient rarely seen in mainstream masculine composition, brings an earthy, almost fungal depth that sits between luxury and wilderness. Layered here with cedar leaf, poppy, and benzoin, it gives the heart a savory, mineral quality that most ouds simply don't attempt. Lapouza built the pyramid around this anomaly: fresh enough to intrigue, warm enough to last.
The evolution
The opening hits hard and fast. Lemon and black pepper arrive together, sharp enough to catch attention, with rhubarb lending a tart, almost sour counterpoint. Twenty minutes in, the citrus softens. The heart opens: cedar leaf and cypress bring green, slightly medicinal clarity, while white truffle introduces its strange, earthy luxury beneath the oud. Benzoin begins to thicken. By the second hour, the fragrance settles. Vetiver and patchouli take over, dark, smoky, grounded. Frankincense adds a thin wisp of smoke. Oakmoss lingers in the base alongside musk, creating a mossy, intimate drydown that stays close to skin for hours after the oud fades. Lasts 6-8 hours on most. Moderate sillage throughout, present, not projecting.
Cultural impact
Crystal Oud occupies a specific space in the niche landscape: Italian brightness meets Indonesian depth. The white truffle note draws comparisons to the more esoteric corners of French aromatic tradition, while the oud base aligns it with contemporary niche sensibility. Wearers describe it as a fragrance for someone who wants oud's warmth without its usual heaviness, a composed, considered choice for collectors tired of the category's defaults.
