The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Equid joined the Atelier d'Artistes collection in 2019, a line where Alexandre.J treats each release as its own small artwork rather than part of a numbered catalog. The collection's name says it plainly: each piece is conceived as an object of craft first, with the scent inside shaped to match that intention. Named for a quiet balance, Equid wears its concept on its sleeve without ever feeling precious about it. One side bitter, one side warm, both held in the same hand. The Atelier d'Artistes framing means the bottle carries as much intention as the juice inside, but the juice is what reaches the room first, and the room tends to notice. Inside the flacon, the composition reads as a study in restraint that still manages to project personality.
The opening is a deliberate collision. Bergamot lifts the citrus; grapefruit slices a sharper angle through it; coffee drops in underneath with the bitterness of a fresh pull rather than the sweetness of a pastry. That trio sets the tone for everything that follows, a top that refuses to behave like a polite handshake and instead grabs attention with both citrus and brew at once. The middle section skips the usual bridges and hands the work to geranium, vetiver, and patchouli instead, which means the heart smells grown, not sporty.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly. Coffee and grapefruit arrive almost at the same moment, projecting a sharp, attention-grabbing first impression that carries across a room. Bergamot softens the edge of both, letting the brew read warm rather than burnt. As the top notes settle, the citrus recedes and the coffee starts to thicken, picking up a faint sweetness from the amber that's already warming underneath. Then the heart takes over. Geranium brings a green floral weight, patchouli arrives earthier than expected, and vetiver cuts clean lines through both. Cedarwood holds the spine steady throughout, a quiet woody thread that keeps the whole composition anchored. Nothing in the heart smells like the opening, which is the surprise. The transition is sharp, almost a wardrobe change, moving from bitter citrus-brew to green floral-earth with almost no gradual fade.
Cultural impact
Equid sits in Alexandre.J's Atelier d'Artistes line, the part of the catalog where each release reads as a standalone composition rather than an entry in a numbered series. The fragrance carries woody and aromatic accords with a distinct coffee tilt at the top, a shape that gives it broad appeal. That positioning makes it a wearable entry point into the house for anyone curious about the brand, and a quieter counterpoint for collectors who already own the louder pieces in the catalog. The composition feels approachable without losing its artistic edge, offering a softer side of the house while still showcasing the same attention to detail.
