The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Majestic Vetiver arrived in 2020 as part of Alexandre.J's Art Deco Collector line, a collection built on the glamour of the 1920s French Riviera, where Gatsby's world and the first Chypre perfumes both took shape. Anne-Sophie Behaghel and Amelie Bourgeois designed the fragrance as a conversation between eras: the bright, effervescent energy of Mediterranean summers and the woody, grounded permanence of a scent meant to linger. The deep green glass flacon, an objet d'art before the first spray, signals what's inside: something worth holding, worth wearing.
Vetiver is the protagonist here, not a supporting note. The perfumers gave it center stage from the opening to the base, building a composition that lets this earthy, smoky root do the heavy lifting. Liatris spicata, an unusual choice, a North American flowering plant with a quiet, sweet quality, gives the heart a floral softness rarely found in aromatic vetiver fragrances. Combined with coriander and labdanum, the drydown never turns heavy, even as vetiver and suede assert themselves. The result is elegant without being precious: fresh enough to open, grounded enough to last.
The evolution
The opening arrives with grapefruit brightness, sharp, clean, immediate. Cardamom's warmth follows within minutes, with basil adding an herbal counterpoint that keeps things interesting. There's no sweetness here, not yet. The transition to the heart is gradual: coriander cools the spice, liatris spicata introduces a subtle floral sweetness that feels almost unexpected. Then the drydown takes over. Vetiver asserts itself with earthy, rooty intensity, the smell of damp soil and smoked wood, while suede wraps around it with soft leather texture. Labdanum adds warmth. Oud whispers at the edges, present but not dominant. The entire arc lasts eight to ten hours, with moderate sillage that stays close to the skin rather than announcing itself across a room.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 launch, The Majestic Vetiver has built a quiet reputation among collectors who appreciate Art Deco elegance and complex aromatic compositions. The uncommon liatris spicata in the heart sets it apart from standard vetiver fragrances, earning praise for its balance of freshness and warmth. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks in without needing to announce themselves, refined, grounded, and unapologetically itself.
