The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Behind Her Eyes, Unspoken Potion arrived in 2026 from Adi Ale Van, the house responsible for a growing catalog of scented compositions that read more like short stories than product launches. The composition was shaped by perfumer Jimmy Bodin, whose work here leans into a mood of held breath and delayed sentences, the quiet tension that builds around something no one has said out loud yet. The name itself reads like a title card from a film you only half-remember: a doorway, a glance, something withheld. There's an opening salvo that hits with a metallic, almost iron-rich edge, the kind of accord that makes you think of old keys, oxidized jewelry, or the inside of a velvet-lined jewelry box left closed for years.
The note pyramid is an unusual one. Blood accord and castoreum sit in the opening alongside cumin and immortelle, which immediately sets an animalic, almost liturgical register. Then comes the heart: jasmine, rose, and mushrooms, a pairing that reads less like perfumery and more like a still life by a painter who studied altarpieces. The mushroom adds something vegetal and damp, pulling the florals off their usual pedestal and into soil. Saffron and pistachio shell in the top add a thread of bittersweet nuttiness that catches the light.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes feel confrontational, almost confrontational on purpose. Cumin, castoreum, and blood push forward in a dense, leathery wave that doesn't ask permission. Cumin burns sharp at the front, then the immortelle and saffron settle in like embers banking down. By the two-hour mark, the heart begins to surface, and the composition opens up: jasmine threaded through mushroom's damp vegetal sweetness, rose arriving dark rather than romantic, more dried petal than fresh bloom. The animalic edge never fully leaves, it just recedes into the texture. The drydown after hour six belongs to castoreum, myrrh, and patchouli, a warm resinous base with enough leather still clinging to the edges that the next morning's wrist test still reads unmistakably like this fragrance, not a ghost of it.
Cultural impact
Unspoken Potion has earned attention for its willingness to open with an uncompromising blood and animalic accord, the kind of introduction that either pulls you in immediately or makes you curious enough to give it another try. There's nothing safe about the opening minutes, and that rawness is precisely the point. The fragrance unfolds in distinct chapters, with each phase revealing something new about the central tension the perfumer seems to be exploring.
