The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sous La Canopée translates to "under the canopy," and Acorelle built this 2019 composition as an aromatic ode to that space beneath a forest roof. Perfumer Katell Plisson worked with a natural and organic ingredient palette, leaning into botanical materials that bring their own character rather than seeking to replicate anything synthetic. Sous La Canopée reads as woody and spicy at its core, structured around cedar and guaiac wood, with citrus opening above and frankincense warming the middle. Pink pepper and cinnamon flicker through the heart notes, pushing the spice forward without overwhelming the quieter florals. Jasmine and violet thread through the composition, adding a delicate floral texture that keeps the woods from feeling too austere.
What makes this composition interesting is how it layers so many distinct notes into a unified structure. Frankincense and ylang-ylang in the heart bring a resinous sweetness, while pink pepper and cinnamon push the spice forward with a slow-building warmth. The base keeps things grounded: cedar, guaiac wood, patchouli, each one offering a different register of woodsmoke and dry bark. Guaiac wood contributes a smoky, almost tea-like quality that bridges the resin and the wood, while patchouli adds an earthy bitterness that anchors the sweeter elements.
The evolution
The opening is where Sous La Canopée shows its brightest face. Grapefruit and bergamot hit first, sharp and clean, with ginger warming underneath to give the citrus a slight bite. The freshness here is brisk and immediate, the kind of clarity that cuts through cooler temperatures. As the composition settles, the citrus recedes and frankincense takes the lead, joined by jasmine and violet that add a quiet floral texture. Pink pepper and cinnamon flicker through the heart, never quite dominating but always present, lending a steady warmth that builds gradually rather than announcing itself all at once. The woods begin their slow takeover as the hours pass. Cedar comes forward with something dry and architectural, and guaiac wood adds a smoky sweetness underneath that reads as warm and slightly sweet.
Cultural impact
Sous La Canopée occupies a particular place within Acorelle's lineup, appealing to wearers who are intentional about what goes into their fragrance and onto their skin. It's not a fragrance designed to chase what's currently trending in mainstream perfumery. Instead, it speaks to a more deliberate kind of consumer, someone who values ingredient transparency and wants their scent choices to reflect specific priorities about formulation. The composition itself rewards that mindset. Cedar and guaiac wood do the heavy structural lifting, while frankincense and the spice notes add complexity without resorting to anything artificial.
