The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sarah McCartney's real Great Aunt Pera worked in Cannes in 1939, right down the hill from Grasse, the historical home of French perfume. When war made staying impossible, she boarded the last ship back to England and left the scent world behind. Aunt Pera's Adventurous Past, launched in 2022, imagines what that interrupted career might have produced. Created in collaboration with the mild horror podcast At Your Peril, the fragrance restricts itself to raw materials that would have been available in 1939, turning a family story into a formula. McCartney built it as a vintage-style chypre: dark, resinous, built to age rather than flash. It's a collaboration with history as much as with a podcast, and the restriction became the brief.
What makes the composition unusual is the self-imposed constraint. Every material here, from the bergamot to the labdanum, had to exist in a perfumer's palette in 1939. That condition shapes the formula's overall character, pulling it toward something that feels rooted in a different era of composition. Vintage style, not vintage accident. Bergamot provides the opening lift, a citrus brightness that sets the tone before the heart notes settle in. Orris and rose otto arrive with powdery restraint, their soapy coolness bridging the gap between the airy top and the denser base waiting below.
The evolution
Bergamot opens bright and almost cheerful, the kind of citrus that suggests this might be a lighter composition than it actually is. That brightness holds the stage briefly before orris and rose arrive together with a powdery, soapy dignity. Then the resins descend. Styrax brings the burnt-honey darkness, benzoin adds vanilla-leaning sweetness, and opoponax pushes in with something almost rubbery and warm. Patchouli and oakmoss ground the whole thing into the chypre register it was always heading toward. Civet flickers underneath, present enough to give the drydown a skin-warm quality. Labdanum and mitti attar settle last, the mitti contributing an earthy minerality that smells like rain on dry earth, which is a strange and beautiful note to find in a resin-heavy base.
Cultural impact
Aunt Pera's Adventurous Past represents a growing approach in indie perfumery where a narrative concept shapes every material choice from the start. The 1939 materials constraint gives the formula a coherence rooted in the story's era, binding together bergamot, orris, rose otto, the resin trio of styrax, benzoin, and opoponax, the chypre foundation of patchouli and oakmoss, and the animalic warmth of civet with labdanum and mitti attar anchoring the base. It appeals to wearers who want a chypre that takes the old rules seriously without pretending the last eighty years of perfumery didn't happen.
