The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2013, X-Ray's laboratory approach produced Enigma, a fragrance that treats olfactory structure as something to be dissected rather than simply admired. Perfumer Irina Burlakova approached the brief with scientific precision, building upward from a foundation of resins and woods to create a scent that reveals itself in distinct phases. The aldehydes function as a catalyst, accelerating and clarifying the opening while styrax and frank incense establish the fragrance's smoky, resinous character. Lilac provides a brief, unexpected floral moment before the composition shifts into its denser middle phase.
The note selection reflects X-Ray's interest in contrast and texture. Aldehydes bring brightness and lift, but they also serve to highlight the darkness of frank incense and styrax that follow. Candle wax bridges the gap between the crisp opening and the warm, resinous base, creating a logical progression rather than a jarring shift. In the drydown, the combination of Siam benzoin, Spanish cistus absolute, and guaiac wood creates a specific warm, smoky, slightly vanillic character that rewards patience. The fragrance asks you to wait for its most interesting phase.
The evolution
The narrative arc of Enigma moves from crisp clarity to warm density. Aldehydes and styrax create that initial sharp, almost clinical opening, but the transition happens quickly as candle wax emerges, grounding the composition in warmth. Clove injects a spicy dimension while freesia, jasmine, and rose layer into something simultaneously floral and waxy, like crushed petals on melted wax. The drydown represents the fragrance's true character, however. Frank incense resurfaces to bridge the heart and base, now paired with Siam benzoin's sweet resin and Spanish cistus absolute's deep, ambery quality. Amber and vanilla soften while guaiac wood and patchouli provide the smoky, slightly tarry foundation that makes this drydown distinctive.
Cultural impact
Since its 2013 debut, Enigma has been praised for its paradoxical blend of clinical aldehydes and warm resin, earning a reputation as a ‘classic‑complex’ scent among niche enthusiasts. Reviews note its ability to feel both nostalgic and experimental, positioning it as a go‑to for those who enjoy a fragrance that reads like a scent‑lab report while still delivering emotional depth.
