The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Villa Erbatium released Gianni's Library in 2021, composed by Ha Minseo Caterina. The fragrance borrows its name from the feeling of stepping into someone's private collection, the kind of room where every spine on the shelf carries a story. It's a quiet study rendered in scent, not a grand hall. The composition leans into atmosphere over flash, treating the space itself as the subject rather than the contents inside. Less about what's been read, more about the room holding the reading: the leather of the chairs, the warmth trapped between wooden shelves, the herbal steam rising from a cup you forgot about. There's a domestic intimacy to the whole thing, a sense of being invited into a space where someone has spent years curating not just the books but the light falling across them.
What makes the composition interesting is how it balances fruity sweetness against austerity. Blackberry and immortelle at the opening give you something almost edible, a dark fruit quality that recalls jam folded into warm bread. Then clary sage, green tea, and leather pull the temperature down, introduce a herbal astringency that stops the sweetness from sliding into dessert territory. The base layers sandalwood and vetiver for something grounded and slightly dry, with amber threading warmth through everything.
The evolution
The first stretch is the boldest the fragrance ever gets. Blackberry hits first, dark and jammy, then immortelle rolls in with its distinctive warm sweetness, a slightly medicinal quality that feels closer to dried botanicals than fresh fruit. There's a brightness from the green tea that keeps things from going too dense, a lifted note that prevents the opening from collapsing into syrup. As the fruit recedes, leather takes the wheel, but not the thick, smoky, saddle-leather type. This is suede. Soft, pliable, the kind of leather that's already been broken in by years of elbows resting on armrests. Clary sage hums underneath, adding an herbal, almost hay-like quality that smells like sun through a window onto dried botanicals. The heart phase stretches longer than you'd expect, holding onto this quiet, contemplative warmth well into the afternoon.
Cultural impact
Gianni's Library arrived in 2021 and quickly found an audience among fragrance enthusiasts drawn to character-driven compositions. By naming a fragrance after a person rather than a place, note, or mood, the house offered something unusual: a scent that felt like a portrait rather than a postcard. The blackberry and immortelle pairing read as nostalgic to many wearers, anchoring the scent in memory and warmth. Reviewers responded to the composition's ability to evoke a specific kind of space.
