The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cypress Opera is the kind of scent you build when you want to bottle a season, not a moment. Villa Erbatium released it in 2024, and the nose behind it is Ha Minseo Caterina, who reached for natural hinoki and cypress oils as the foundation. The brand's own description frames it as the grandeur of a cypress forest in midwinter, the kind that stays evergreen even when everything else has gone quiet. There is no single landscape being referenced. It is the idea of resilience, of trees that hold their color while the world around them shifts to grey. Mandarin and olive leaf arrive as the light filtering through the canopy, a brighter note against the deeper green mass. The composition reads as Villa Erbatium's quietest statement yet: a meditation on staying green when winter asks you to let go.
What sets Cypress Opera apart from the endless parade of conifer fragrances is the decision to lead with actual natural oils rather than reconstructed accords. Hinoki is the Japanese cypress, a note that anchors the composition with a warm, woody character. Scots pine adds a sharper, resinous counterweight, while the named cypress grounds the heart with its clean, dry green. The olive leaf in the opening is a less common choice, an astringent, herbal green that snaps against the citrus rather than blending into it.
The evolution
Cypress Opera opens with a bright, slightly bitter snap of mandarin orange laced through green olive leaf, the citrus quickly giving way to a dense heart of hinoki cypress, Scots pine, and cypress that reads like a walk through a cold Mediterranean grove, and finally settles into a warm, low cedarwood and amber base that keeps the scent close to the skin for hours, gradually shifting from sharp daylight greenery to a quiet, resinous evening glow.
Cultural impact
Cypress Opera reads as a contemplative green, built around actual natural oils rather than reconstructed accords, and that material choice gives it a particular kind of authority with wearers who pay attention to what's inside the bottle. It wears well in cooler months and suits the kind of person who prefers their greens unsweetened. On skin, the opening citrus and herbal olive leaf lift briefly before the woody heart takes over, and the drydown settles into a quiet, resinous close that lingers close rather than projecting widely.
