The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gwen Stefani created Harajuku Lovers as a collection of five dolls, each representing one of her Harajuku Girls, and each with its own distinct fragrance. Created in cooperation with Yves Cassar and Pascal Gaurin of IFF, Love translates that emotional core into scent: a bright citrus opening that feels like morning light, a floral heart that lingers with warmth, and a base that settles close to skin, intimate without trying to dominate the room. The citrus sparkles against the skin, suggesting a carefree optimism, while the floral middle ground adds depth and a sense of softness that feels approachable rather than overwhelming.
The composition unfolds in distinct stages. Bright citrus and stone fruit open the fragrance, setting an uplifting tone that feels both lively and refined. As the initial brightness settles over the first hour, the florals take center stage, with peony blending alongside rose, jasmine, and nectarine blossom to create a fuller, more rounded middle experience. The transition brings a warmer character to the scent, shifting from the crisp opening toward something more enveloping.
The evolution
The opening begins with bright citrus and stone fruit, as bergamot, pink pomelo, peach, and bamboo leaf combine to create an uplifting start. The florals then take their turn, with peony, rose, jasmine, and narcissus layering into a full arrangement that feels lush and inviting. The base eventually emerges, replacing the florals with ylang-ylang, vanilla, and a gentle musk presence. The sillage remains present throughout, noticeable without being overwhelming. The floral and vanilla drydown lingers close to the skin, offering a gentle reminder of the fragrance as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
Love sits comfortably in the sweet floral category, approachable, charming, and unapologetically soft. It's a fragrance that leans into accessibility, offering a warm and inviting character that appeals to those seeking something pleasant and easy to wear. The peach-peony-vanilla combination creates a distinctive sweet floral that feels both comforting and memorable. For those who remember the Harajuku Lovers dolls, Love carries a connection to that playful era. For those discovering it fresh, it presents itself as a sweet floral with a gentle charm that stands apart from more austere fragrance choices.
