Why it exists.
The beginning
My Greek Lover came together in 2022, the work of Sunyata Calogeros-Smith, the perfumer behind Untamed. The name gestures at romance, but the heart of the composition is something else entirely. Rather than chasing seduction or serving as an abstract mood piece, the fragrance sets out to do something more literal and more interesting. It tries to place you somewhere specific, to summon a particular sensory experience through scent rather than telling you how to feel about it. Calogeros-Smith approaches perfume as a medium for translating specific sensations into wearable form. Her work treats individual compositions as self-contained little worlds, each one keyed to a distinct setting and atmosphere. My Greek Lover is a clear example of that idea in practice.
The interesting choice here is civet. In a bright, sunny citrus-and-fig composition, that animalic note does unexpected work. It grounds the fruit, gives the orange blossom a slightly skin-warmed undertone, and keeps the sweetness from drifting into something innocent or synthetic. Honey does similar duty in the base, pulling the green grapes and quince toward something resinous and sun-cured. There's also mastic, a pine-scented resin, which adds its own character to the drydown. Cypress and pine in the base reinforce the same sense of place.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to citrus. Bitter orange and lemon lead, sharpened by herbal notes and a current of spice that reads more like cracked black pepper than anything sweet. Grape gives the opening a juicy, almost wine-like quality. The accord is bright, lifted, a little tart. On a warm day it smells like the rind of fruit just cut open. Then the fig arrives. It's not jammy or overripe. It reads fresh, green-skinned, the way figs smell when they're still attached to the tree, warmed by afternoon sun. Orange blossom and jasmine settle in alongside quince, and the composition shifts from sparkling to softer, more floral. The honey note begins to surface here, ambering the fruit without making it sticky. This middle phase runs warm and generous, the kind of scent that makes people lean closer without knowing why. The drydown is where the surprise lives. Cypress and pine take over, and the greens turn resinous. Civet and musk come forward, giving the base a warm, slightly animal undertone that has no business working this well alongside citrus and fig.

My Greek Lover draws on a Mediterranean-inspired palette, using regional materials like mastic alongside more familiar citrus and fig combinations. It sits comfortably within the niche fragrance conversation as a composition that prioritizes place over mood, treating scent as a vehicle for evoking a specific setting rather than an abstract feeling. One wearer described it as a summer-in-a-bottle experience, the kind of scent that draws attention on a warm afternoon rather than at a formal event. That reaction captures what the composition is built to do. It doesn't ask to be admired in a controlled, intimate setting.
