The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
NU Leather is Luca Maffei's tribute to the material that started everything. Leather, the brand notes, was the first garment worn by human beings at the dawn of time. It's desire made tangible, ancient and primitive, yet refined and elegant. Maffei wanted to capture that tension: the duality of something primal that became civilized. The name itself is simple declaration. No explanation needed.
What makes this composition unusual is the frankincense-papyrus axis in the heart. Both materials carry smoke and history, frankincense from ritual, papyrus from ancient pages. Combined with Sichuan pepper, they create a middle phase that feels archaeological, like opening a leather-bound book in an empty library. The suede isn't soft in a feminine way. It's the suede of well-worn driving gloves, of a leather jacket that's been everywhere.
The evolution
The opening lasts longer than expected. Bergamot and bitter orange hold their ground for fifteen to twenty minutes before the nutmeg sparks the transition. The citrus doesn't disappear, it retreats into the background, becoming a memory of brightness beneath everything that follows. Then suede arrives, and with it, the frankincense begins to climb. Smoke rises without heat. Papyrus adds a dry, paper-like quality. The Sichuan pepper registers as a tingle more than a burn, clean spice, not aggressive. The drydown is where sandalwood earns its billing as the main protagonist. Creamy, warm, slightly woody, it holds the leather and musk together for hours. Vetiver adds earthiness underneath. Cashmeran gives the base a powdery softness that prevents the leather from becoming harsh. On fabric, the fragrance survives a full day. On skin, it evolves from morning confidence to evening warmth without ever repeating itself.
Cultural impact
NU Leather fits into the leather fragrance tradition while sidestepping its most common pitfalls. Where many leather scents lean masculine or aggressive, this one uses suede and sandalwood to soften the material, making it unisex without losing character. The frankincense-papyrus heart gives it an aromatic complexity that appeals to collectors who want something that rewards attention. It's not trying to compete with mainstream designers, it's built for someone who already knows what they want.
