The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Celine Ellena created Bana Banana in 2019 as a study in tropical abstraction for L'Artisan Parfumeur, the Paris house founded in 1976 that has consistently championed unusual natural ingredients and artisanal craft. Rather than reaching for synthetic fruit accords, Ellena looked to the banana flower itself, a waxy white bloom with a distinctly honeyed, slightly green character that most wearers have never encountered in perfumery. The banana flower's subtle beauty lies in its restraint, its ability to suggest tropical origin without the blunt force of conventional fruit notes.
The note structure reflects L'Artisan Parfumeur's broader philosophy of working with unusual natural materials that tell specific stories. Violet leaf and banana flower are not conventional perfumery ingredients; they require careful sourcing and extraction to preserve their distinctive characters. The pairing of nutmeg and black pepper in the opening grounds the tropical abstraction in something more familiar, while tonka bean and amber in the drydown provide the warmth that makes the fragrance wearable across contexts. Iris functions as a bridge between the green opening and the warm drydown, its powdery creaminess softening transitions throughout the composition.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through distinct phases that trace a complete arc from sharp greenness to warm intimacy. Opening with violet leaf, nutmeg, and black pepper, the composition establishes an almost medicinal crispness that quickly softens as the warmer spices take hold. The heart phase introduces banana flower alongside iris and jasmine, creating a creamy, powdery floral middle ground that feels simultaneously exotic and familiar. As iris and jasmine fade, the drydown phase brings tonka bean, musk, and amber into focus, wrapping the wearer in a warm, skin-close embrace that lingers for hours after application.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Bana Banana has sparked conversation for turning a seldom‑used banana flower into a wearable scent, earning praise for its playful yet sophisticated twist on fruit‑floral territory. Wearers often cite its sweet‑spicy contrast as a conversation starter, placing it alongside other L'Artisan gems that celebrate unexpected botanical pairings.
