The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
True Star Men arrived in 2005, inspired by the kind of charisma that doesn't need to try. Enrique Iglesias was the face, the voice behind some of the decade's most-played songs, photographed by Mario Testino for the campaign. Tommy Hilfiger's American sportswear sensibility had always worn well and wide. The fragrance opens with bright, tingly star anise that catches attention without announcing itself. At its heart, the licorice and iris create a cool, powdery tension that evolves as it settles into the skin. The dry down brings warmth from saffron and vanilla, with leather grounding the composition in a smooth, lasting finish. It wears close to the body at first, then blooms outward as the hours pass, revealing layers that reward patience.
What makes the composition stand apart is the licorice-and-iris pairing at its center. Star anise opens bright and tingly, but the heart slides into something darker, almost powdery in the way orris root gets. The scent isn't trying to be challenging, it's just not afraid of what happens when anise and leather share a sentence. The saffron in the base keeps everything warm without tipping into sweetness. Vanilla and leather finish the thought. The dry down settles into a warm, lingering embrace of vanilla and leather that rounds out the composition beautifully.
The evolution
The grapefruit doesn't wait. Within seconds, pink citrus and star anise arrive together, the anise is the strangeness that catches your attention first. Ten minutes in, the freesia softens the sharp edges while licorice settles into the composition like a quiet decision being made. The heart belongs to orris root after that, taking 20 minutes to fully arrive. By the third hour, leather has taken over the drydown. Vanilla and sandalwood underneath keep it close to the skin, warm but never loud. The saffron lingers longest, a faint spice that stays through hour six. On fabric, the vanilla holds into the next morning.
Cultural impact
True Star Men arrived in 2005 alongside a campaign featuring Enrique Iglesias photographed by Mario Testino. The fragrance has a licorice-anise heart and warm leather drydown. It opens with bright star anise, shifts into a darker, powdery licorice and iris heart, and settles into a rich base of vanilla and leather. The composition brings enough character to stand apart.
