The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lunar Moods arrived in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, a collection centered on reinterpretation of established olfactory compositions through the house's distinctive perspective. The composition reads as amber woody and oriental spicy, built on a foundation of oud, sandalwood, and leather with enough pepper and resin on top to give it backbone. The opening bursts forward with a triple-pepper arrangement of pink, Sichuan, and black varieties, each contributing its own character, while ginger adds warmth and juniper introduces a crisp, cooling counterpoint. Tagetes (also listed as marigold in some databases) weaves a dusty, herbal undertone through the top, softening what could otherwise read as pure heat.
What makes Lunar Moods distinctive is the sheer density of pepper in the opening. Three pepper variants, juniper, and ginger open the composition, a deliberate stacking of spice that announces its presence immediately. Then the heart pivots unexpectedly. Carrot seed and cyclamen are uncommon in this register, lending an earthy, vegetal quality beneath the more familiar blackcurrant and neroli. The carrot seed brings a dry, rooty dimension that catches the nose off guard, while cyclamen adds a soft, watery greenness that keeps the heart from feeling too dense.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are the loudest. Three peppers and ginger announce themselves with sharp, buzzing heat while juniper keeps the whole top from tipping into pure fire. Tagetes adds a dusty, almost herbal undertone that softens the edges and keeps the spice from becoming one-dimensional. Then the heart moves in. Blackcurrant brings dark fruit sweetness, neroli brightens the picture, and carrot seed introduces a dry, rooty quality that catches you off guard. Cyclamen adds a soft greenness beneath the more conventional florals, and the heart as a whole reads as unexpectedly vegetal for an oriental spicy composition. Frankincense smooths everything out, and the whole thing cools and deepens as the spice begins to settle. By hour two, you're in iris territory: powdery, soft, with that violet-like rootiness sitting under the florals.
Cultural impact
Lunar Moods arrives in 2025 as a spice-forward composition that places pepper at the center of its structure. The triple-pepper opening, combining pink, Sichuan, and black varieties, makes an immediate statement and signals a focus on heat as a primary material rather than a background accent. The composition taps into renewed interest in oriental spicy structures that lean into resin, oud, and leather rather than the sweeter gourmand territory that has dominated much of the market in recent years. The iris and carrot seed heart introduces an unexpected vegetal and powdery dimension, offering contrast to the dense, spiced top and base.
