The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza composed Escape For Him in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line. The opening leans into a confident aromatic warmth, the kind of spicy-citrus energy that commands attention without raising its voice. Cognac and Italian lemon lead the charge up top, anchoring the scent in bright, spirited energy before it deepens. The cognac carries a soft amber undertone, almost like polished wood catching candlelight, while the lemon cuts through with a sharp, zest-forward brightness that refuses to sit still. Together they create a tension between warmth and lift that sets the tone for everything that follows. From the very first spray, there's a sense of structure, of a fragrance that knows where it's headed and isn't afraid to get there quickly.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the density of its spice rack. Bay leaf, caraway, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, juniper, carnation, geranium, lavender. Nine materials in the heart alone, each pulling the scent in a slightly different direction. Bay leaf brings a green, almost herbal bitterness. Caraway adds its unmistakable earthy-cool character. Cardamom hums underneath with a quiet sweetness. Cinnamon and nutmeg warm the whole composition from the inside out. Juniper keeps things sharp and slightly resinous. Carnation pushes a clove-like floral note into the mix.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to the cognac splash and the citrus quartet. Sharp, almost boozy, lifting off skin with Italian lemon and bergamot chasing each other. Then the spices take over, and the fragrance changes register entirely. Carnation and cinnamon bring the sweetness. Lavender and juniper keep it grounded. Cardamom and nutmeg add a quiet hum underneath. As the composition settles, the citrus fades into memory and the warmth begins to climb. The base arrives as vanilla, tonka, sandalwood, and patchouli, softening every sharp edge the spice layer introduced. Vanilla brings its familiar creamy sweetness, tonka adds an almond-like richness, sandalwood offers a milky smoothness, and patchouli grounds everything with its earthy depth. The drydown feels complete rather than diminished, like a conversation that ends on a confident note rather than trailing off.
Cultural impact
Escape For Him draws on a recognizable aromatic vocabulary, the cognac-and-spice structure that has become a touchstone in masculine perfumery. The composition speaks to a tradition of warm, citrus-anchored fragrances built around layered spice hearts and resinous bases. There's a familiarity to the shape, a sense that the elements belong together even when they push in different directions. The cognac opening, the dense spice rack at the heart, the creamy-woody drydown: each component feels like part of a lineage that wears its influences openly. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, and it doesn't need to.
