The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Counter Move entered The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection in 2026. Perfumer Mahsam Raza built it around a hook that reads almost confectionery on paper: banana, guava, melon up top, a floral heart of orange blossom, osmanthus, and ylang-ylang, then a warm base of patchouli, pink pepper, and sandalwood. The opening is a stack of tropical fruit notes that feel deliberate rather than decorative, each one chosen for how it sits against the next. Banana brings a soft, rounded sweetness, guava layers in that slightly musky, almost green tropical depth, and melon adds a watery brightness that keeps the top from collapsing into syrup. The heart that follows trades that fruit brightness for something more textured.
The interesting move here is banana. It lands early, cushioned by guava and melon, then immediately hands the composition off to osmanthus, which carries a natural apricot-skin warmth that makes the banana feel grown up. The ylang-ylang and orange blossom add depth without pushing it into sunscreen territory. Then patchouli and pink pepper arrive and the whole thing pivots toward something warm and grounded. It's a sequence designed to make you forget you ever smelled the fruit.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all fruit, no apology. Melon hits bright and dewy, guava folds underneath it with that almost-musky tropical depth, and banana arrives late in the opening like it wandered in from another room. Nothing screams. Everything glistens. By the half-hour mark the osmanthus has quietly taken over, and there's this apricot-skin warmth underneath that feels less like a note and more like a change in light. The ylang-ylang and orange blossom never fully separate from each other. They hover. The sandalwood begins pulling the whole thing down to earth, with patchouli arriving not as a dirt note but as a shadow. Pink pepper shows up at the edges, just enough to remind you the base has teeth. The drydown settles into a soft sandalwood-and-floral close that smells like the back of your neck at the end of a long afternoon.
Cultural impact
Counter Move enters the fragrance landscape in 2026 with a composition that leans into fruit and floral territory without defaulting to either. Its banana-guava-melon top reads playful rather than juvenile, offering a tropical opening that feels considered rather than tossed together. The inclusion of orange blossom, osmanthus, and ylang-ylang in the heart gives the fragrance a white-floral anchor that keeps the fruit from drifting into pure novelty. The base of patchouli, pink pepper, and sandalwood grounds the composition, lending it a warm and slightly earthy close that contrasts with the brighter top.
