The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ellis Brooklyn built its identity on the translation of ordinary moments into aromatic experiences. Bee Shapiro covered beauty at The New York Times before she started translating the world into scent. Marshmallows arrived as the logical extension of that philosophy, not a luxury fragrance, an attempt to capture the sensory memory of a summer evening around a fire. Gabriela Chelariu worked with these familiar materials to create something that feels both nostalgic and refined.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy of accessible pleasure. Marshmallow and Caramel are universally understood scents, but paired with Benzoin and Patchouli, they become something with complexity rather than mere sweetness. Peach Skin and Lemon keep the opening honest, while Vanilla Orchid and Amberwood ensure the heart and base have enough sophistication to reward close attention. This is a fragrance built for the moments when you want comfort without simplicity, warmth without heaviness, sweetness without guilt.
The evolution
The opening brings an immediate sense of recognition, as if the memory of marshmallows warming by a fire has been captured in liquid form. Peach Skin adds a textural quality that feels like the moment before a fruit ripens, while Lemon provides a brief flash of brightness that keeps the sweetness honest. As time passes, Benzoin emerges from the heart, bringing its sticky, balsamic warmth while Caramel deepens the edible quality. Vanilla Orchid threads through, adding creaminess without becoming heavy. The drydown is where Patchouli works its magic, grounding what could have become pure sugar into something with earth and shadow. Amberwood provides the final structure, a dry woodiness that keeps the fragrance from disappearing entirely.
Cultural impact
The opening citrus note surprises people expecting a straightforward marshmallow sweetness. That's the hook. Marshmallows landed as part of Ellis Brooklyn's series of playful, food-inspired fragrances like Lychee Milkshake and Mango Milkshake, designed to make clean fragrance feel approachable and fun. The citrus catches you off guard, a bright interruption that makes the sweetness feel earned rather than automatic. It's the kind of scent that invites conversation about what clean fragrance can be.
