The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Barb Stegemann launched The 7 Virtues in 2010 with a clear mandate: create clean fragrances that rebuild communities. The brand sources ingredients from regions rebuilding after conflict, Afghanistan, Haiti, Rwanda, and channels fair-trade ethics into every bottle. Lotus Pear arrived in 2022, developed in collaboration with perfumer Céline Herbette, who approached the composition with a commitment to transparent, unadorned materials. The brief was straightforward: capture the sensation of a pear orchard at golden hour, translate it into florals, and anchor the result in a warm, wearable drydown. Herbette worked with The 7 Virtues' sourcing model to ensure the final product aligned with the brand's ethical framework, selecting jasmine from regions the company supports and vanilla that meets their clean formulation standards.
The note selection in Lotus Pear reflects a philosophy of accessibility without compromise. Pear and peach anchor the opening in familiar fruit territory, making the fragrance approachable for those new to fragrance or seeking an everyday option. The floral heart moves beyond the expected by including lotus, a note often associated with premium or niche compositions, and balances it with the crowd-pleasing warmth of jasmine and rose. The drydown prioritizes comfort, using vanilla and gardenia to create a finish that feels cozy rather than overwhelming. This approach suits The 7 Virtues' broader mission: ethical ingredients do not require sacrificing pleasure or wearability.
The evolution
The narrative arc of Lotus Pear follows a clear trajectory from crisp fruit through luminous florals to intimate warmth. It opens with pear as the protagonist, its fresh sweetness balanced by mandarin's citrus edge and peach's soft ripeness. This immediate impression feels like morning light through an orchard canopy. Within twenty minutes, the fruit recedes and the floral heart takes center stage. Lotus leads, bringing its characteristic watery, meditative quality that elevates the composition beyond simple sweetness. Jasmine follows with its depth, orange blossom adds elegant bitterness, and rose contributes a gentle powderiness that softens the transition. This heart phase persists for hours, revealing itself in waves rather than delivering all at once. The drydown shifts the energy from bright to intimate. Geranium grounds the florals with green precision while gardenia provides creamy richness.
Cultural impact
The Lotus Pear fragrance reflects a broader shift in how consumers engage with beauty products, particularly within the ethical luxury space. The 7 Virtues has built its brand around conflict-free sourcing and cruelty-free practices, elements that have become increasingly important to modern fragrance buyers. This particular scent, with its emphasis on fresh fruity notes like Williams pear and peach, speaks to a preference for bright, accessible compositions that feel both modern and timeless. The accessibility of these notes, paired with the ethical production story, creates a bridge between conscious consumerism and sensory pleasure.
