The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
PUR 01 emerged from Son Venïn's 2016 debut with a clear intent: build a fragrance around tension. Not the tension of conflict, but the tension of place, the collision between Scandinavian restraint and Mediterranean warmth. The brand wanted a composition that felt both designed and alive. Something that could open sharp and green, then settle into something your skin makes its own. The notes were chosen not for harmony alone, but for the spaces between them, where lavender lives in two places at once, where eucalyptus cuts before it comforts. This creates a fragrance that resists easy categorization, offering instead an aromatic experience that rewards patience.
What makes PUR 01 structurally unusual is the lavender appearing in both heart and base. Most fragrances introduce a note once and move on. Here, lavender threads the composition from its aromatic opening through to the drydown, evolving rather than repeating. The heart pairs it with rose petals and thyme, a herbal-floral combination that reads as both medicinal and romantic, depending on your relationship with lavender. The base reinforces this continuity with guaiac wood's smoky warmth and patchouli's earthiness, creating a foundation that doesn't abandon the herbal character even as the composition deepens. It's a composition that trusts one note to carry meaning across the entire arc.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, saffron and cardamom arrive with an almost metallic brightness, quickly joined by eucalyptus that adds a mentholated cool. Bergamot lingers at the edges, citrus and green. The sharpness eventually softens, giving way as the lavender begins to assert itself, pulling the composition toward something herbal and familiar, though never mundane. By the heart phase, rose petals and thyme emerge alongside the lavender, creating a warm floral-herbal middle that feels less like a garden and more like the air after rain. The drydown settles into a quiet conversation between lavender and wood, with guaiac wood arriving to bring its characteristic smoky sweetness while patchouli grounds everything with earthiness that keeps the lavender honest. Close enough to smell. Not loud enough to announce.
Cultural impact
PUR 01 arrived in 2016 as Son Venïn launched its debut collection, introducing an unusual lavender threading from heart through base that distinguished the Norwegian brand within the niche fragrance landscape. This aromatic structure, with lavender weaving through multiple phases of the composition rather than appearing only in the opening, set PUR 01 apart from more conventional fragrance constructions.
