The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Marvellous Star arrives quietly. The 2019 launch introduced this composition, bringing something celestial into the house's repertoire. The name itself, Marvellous Star, carries something luminous and distant. A warm room, stars visible through the trees, the kind of quiet that settles after you've already stopped looking at your phone. That atmosphere is exactly what this fragrance was built to hold. Opening with a bright, almost transparent sweetness, it moves through layers that feel both airy and grounded. There is a gentle warmth that doesn't announce itself but rather accumulates, like sunlight finding its way through curtains.
What makes Marvellous Star interesting isn't the individual notes, coconut, chocolate, vanilla, all of which appear in dozens of fragrances across the market. It's the way Shiro has structured them. The coconut arrives first, not as a tropical gimmick but as a soft, almost buttery bridge between the cool anise and the rich chocolate heart. Anise often reads sharp or medicinal in compositions; here it reads green, almost bracing, before the chocolate deepens everything. The vanilla doesn't compete with the chocolate, it nestles underneath, adding cream without sweetness overload.
The evolution
It starts with a cool, bright note, the coconut and anise together create something that smells like the outside of a tropical drink before you've taken the first sip. Green and sweet, with just enough of the anise to keep things interesting. Within twenty minutes, the chocolate arrives and the whole composition pivots. The coconut doesn't disappear, it softens, becoming the cream that holds the chocolate in place. This is where Marvellous Star earns its name: warm without heat, sweet without demand. The drydown is where Shiro's character shows. Vanilla and sandalwood settle close to the skin, the cedar adding a dry, woody finish that prevents the whole thing from melting into something shapeless. Five to six hours of wear, projecting modestly from the wrist, present but never overpowering, a quiet companion through the day rather than a statement piece.
Cultural impact
Marvellous Star stands apart within the Shiro range, leaning into warmth and comfort with an unusual directness for the house. Chocolate and vanilla in one composition isn't subtle, and for some wearers this makes it the most approachable release in the lineup. It arrived in 2019, a year when the house seemed willing to explore different territory within its established visual and olfactory language.
