The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rubeus Milano, the Milan-based house founded in 2018, built its identity on restrained elegance and contemporary Italian design translated into scent. Calicanto arrived in 2021 as part of the I Giardini Di Venezia collection, taking its name from the calycanthus flower, a bloom that pushes through winter's chill with quiet determination. The fragrance is the work of perfumer Yann Vasnier, whose background in creating balanced, architectural compositions aligns perfectly with Rubeus's vision.
The note progression reflects a deliberate philosophy: open bright, bloom gracefully, land grounded. Bergamot and pink pepper provide a distinctive citrus-and-spice opening that sets Calicanto apart from generic white-florals. The Narcissus and Wintersweet pairing brings an unusual depth to the heart, neither sweet nor green but something between. Cedarwood and patchouli anchor the composition in a way that makes the fragrance suitable across seasons without favoring any single one, while Sylkolide ensures a clean, modern drydown that feels polished rather than heavy.
The evolution
The scent journey begins with bergamot and Mahonial delivering a citrus freshness sharpened by pink pepper's soft spice. Within the first twenty minutes, the heart opens into Narcissus, Orange Blossom, and Peony, with Wintersweet threading through to add a honeyed undertone that deepens the floral presence. As the hours pass, cedarwood and patchouli take over, replacing the brightness with a woody, slightly earthy warmth that rounds out the experience with confidence and restraint.
Cultural impact
Calicanto, introduced in 2021, quickly became a reference point for modern Italian perfumery, reflecting a cultural shift toward minimalist yet expressive scents. Its blend of bergamot, mahonial® and pink pepper resonates with a generation that values both freshness and subtle complexity. The fragrance’s reception highlighted a growing appreciation for clean, garden‑inspired narratives in urban settings, influencing subsequent releases from Rubeus and peer houses. By embodying a quiet confidence, Calicanto contributed to a broader dialogue about sustainable sourcing and transparent ingredient disclosure, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to ethical practices.
