Why it exists.
The beginning
Majestic Aoud launched in 2018 as part of Roja Dove's Aoud collection. The name says what it means. Nothing about it apologizes. Aquilaria-derived oud anchors the entire structure, its dense, resinous character functioning as the gravitational center of the composition. From the opening spray, that oud announces itself with the tarry, slightly medicinal depth that connoisseurs associate with the highest grades of agarwood. Surrounding notes either amplify its darkness or attempt to civilize it. Few succeed. The accord builds with a leathery, almost smoky intensity, wrapping the wearer in something that feels less like a fragrance and more like an environment. It's dense without being suffocating, heavy without losing its clarity.
What makes Majestic Aoud unusual isn't the oud alone. It's the company's roster of animalic materials working in concert: castoreum, civet, ambergris. These three notes operate as a feral undertone, lending the composition a raw, almost bodily warmth that conventional perfumery rarely attempts. Grasse jasmine and May rose add a European floral high note, a deliberate friction against the animalic base. The jasmine arrives with a narcotic, indolic lushness. The May rose contributes its honeyed, slightly jammy sweetness.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to bergamot and rosemary, but only briefly. They function as a handshake, not an introduction. The rosemary cuts through with its sharp, herbal clarity, while the bergamot adds a bright citrus lift that quickly recedes. Grasse jasmine and May rose arrive next, but they're quickly swallowed by something darker. Osmanthus lends its leathery apricot quality, then the base takes over and never fully releases its grip. Gurjun balsam and patchouli thicken the texture, adding an earthy, resinous weight. Oud arrives like smoke that won't clear, its presence intensifying with each passing hour. Civet and castoreum add warmth that reads more biological than floral, lending the composition its characteristic raw edge. Labdanum, cypriol, and guaiac wood emerge as the fragrance settles, deepening the woody character. Saffron persists as a quiet thread throughout the wear.
Cultural impact
Majestic Aoud sits at the intersection of British haute perfumery and Middle Eastern oud tradition. Wearers who gravitate toward it tend to want presence, the kind that announces itself without apology. It shares territory with compositions like Imperial Oud and Dejan, and finds kinship with Xerjoff's Gao. The fragrance was apparently discontinued at some point, a detail that has only heightened its desirability among collectors. For those who own a bottle, it carries the weight of something scarce, a composition that can no longer be easily obtained.
