The beginning
Woody Spirit Extrait de Parfum arrived in 2023 from Ramón Béjar, a Spanish niche perfumer whose name has become quietly associated with extrait de parfum work. The name says the shape: this is wood rendered as devotion rather than decoration. Woody Spirit belongs to his My Universe Privée Collection. The release reflects his continued interest in olfactory materials that carry weight: roots, resins, woods that feel old before they've reached the skin. Rather than building a conventional woody fragrance around cedar and sandalwood alone, Béjar threads cypriol oil through the center, a material with deep roots in aromatic tradition.
What distinguishes this composition is the placement of cypriol oil, or nagarmotha, at the structural heart. Here it sits in the middle layer, flanked by sandalwood's creamy warmth and lavender's herbal clarity. The cardamom opening adds a counterweight of green spice that keeps the composition from sinking into pure smoke. Sandalwood does what sandalwood does, softens edges and fills space with its milky, almost lactonic density, but it never overwhelms the cypriol.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are a bright, slightly green opening: cardamom's snap, bergamot's citrus peel, a wash of green that reads almost like crushed stems in a garden. Then the handoff. Bergamot recedes and cypriol rises from the center, dragging lavender and sandalwood with it. The lavender is present but restrained, never cologne-sharp, lending a clean herbal line that keeps the smoke from going heavy. By the two-hour mark, the composition has settled into its base architecture: vetiver's dry earthiness, tonka's low sweetness, musk's skin-warmth. The cypriol lingers longer than expected, threading through the drydown like a smoke trail that won't quite dissolve. The way the scent transitions from top to heart is gradual rather than abrupt, each phase easing into the next with little friction.
Cultural impact
Woody Spirit occupies a specific corner of the niche fragrance world, one oriented toward contemplative, material-driven compositions rather than bright, crowd-pleasing releases. It reads as meditative and inward-facing, closer to the slow-burn territory of incense-rooted perfumery than to mainstream designer woods. The cypriol-forward structure gives it a distinctive signature, earthy and smoky without resorting to oud. Within Ramón Béjar's catalog, the composition fits alongside his other My Universe Privée releases that lean toward resin, wood, and amber territory.
