The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sanctum arrived in 2014 from Ramón Béjar's Barcelona studio. The name itself is a statement, sanctum, meaning a sacred space, a place set apart. The composition carries that register of intentionality and quiet confidence. It doesn't announce. It settles. The fragrance embodies restraint, a quality that sets it apart from more theatrical incense compositions. Its presence is felt rather than proclaimed, offering a sensory experience that invites contemplation rather than spectacle. The structure prioritizes depth and subtlety, allowing each element to unfold naturally within a carefully considered framework. This approach creates a scent that rewards patience, revealing its layers gradually to those who engage with it on its own terms.
What makes Sanctum structurally unusual is the way resin compounds move through every tier of the pyramid. The top is pure frankincense, the dry, slightly medicinal smoke of Boswellia. The heart layers smoked incense resin with myrrh oil, which brings a warm, balsamic quality that prevents the composition from tipping into sweetness too early. Then the base anchors everything with benzoin, a sticky resin that behaves less like a typical base note and more like a slow-release capsule, keeping the incense alive for hours.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: frankincense smoke fills the space around you, particulate and present but not harsh. There's a brief citrus flicker from the bergamot-like quality of fresh frankincense, soon replaced by the slower, heavier smoke of the incense resin in the heart. The myrrh arrives as the smoke settles, bringing warmth and a slight medicinal edge that grounds the composition. As the benzoin begins its gradual unfold, it brings a sticky, sweet quality that softens any sharpness and blends with the myrrh's depth. The sandalwood emerges quietly, adding creaminess without distraction. The overall trajectory moves from sharp, defined smoke toward a soft, enveloping warmth that clings close to the skin. The smoke never fully disappears, becoming intimate, close, a warmth you carry rather than project.
Cultural impact
Sanctum occupies a specific corner of the niche incense landscape. It appeals to wearers who want the contemplative dimension of frankincense without the performance. Among Béjar's catalog, Sanctum represents a refined expression of incense as a medium for quiet reflection, stripping away excess to arrive at something essential and focused.
