The beginning
Apresiasi launched in 2023, stepping into the same space as Project 1945's other Indonesian fragrances. Where The Great Batavia reconstructs the sensory weight of Dutch colonial Jakarta and Waters of Maluku pulls from the Spice Islands' centuries of trade, Apresiasi turns toward something lighter. It reads less like a historical document and more like an interval between pages, a pause that invites attention rather than demands it. Project 1945 treats each release as a specific place and period captured in scent, and this one lands closer to a bright morning than a historical turning point, but the method holds. Citrus and green florals form the spine, layered so that each note supports the next without crowding the composition.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the layering of three distinct citrus expressions around a quiet floral core. Orange and bergamot handle the bright, juicy opening, each pulling in a slightly different direction: the orange warm and almost edible, the bergamot cooler and more elegant with that subtle bitter edge. Then neroli and petitgrain pull the whole thing sideways into something greener and more bitter, the way real orange trees smell rather than the fruit itself.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong almost entirely to orange and bergamot, bright and almost fizzy on skin, with ambrette humming underneath like warm laundry. Around the forty-minute mark the neroli begins to surface, and the shift is unmistakable: the brightness goes from citrus-juice to citrus-blossom, from sharp to honeyed, from a glass of juice to a walk through a flowering grove. Petitgrain adds a green bitterness that keeps the neroli from turning soapy. This middle phase runs roughly two to three hours, the green-floral core sitting close to the skin with a kind of restrained clarity that rewards close attention. The neroli and petitgrain work as counterweights, one pulling toward sweetness and bloom, the other toward stems and leaves, and the balance between them defines the character of this stage.

Within the broader landscape of Indonesian niche perfumery, Apresiasi occupies a position that's worth examining. The composition draws on a clean, citrus-forward approach that places it alongside other fresh, bright fragrances in the niche space, where Nishane's Wulong Cha appears in community comparisons. The fragrance operates in a register that prioritizes clarity and lift over density, which distinguishes it from heavier compositions built around resins, smoke, or dark woods.
