No8 Opopanax

Opoponax sits in perfumery's awkward middle ground: sweet like myrrh, balsamic like benzoin, but with a bitter, almost animalic edge that most formulations sand down to nothing. Prada chose not to sand it down. An Extrait concentration gave Andrier the latitude to let the material speak at full volume, its golden syrup character, its warmth, its quiet sensuality, without the dilution that lower concentrations impose.

The evolution

The opening is thick. Buttery opoponax and galbanum arrive together, the galbanum lending a green, slightly medicinal sharpness that could read aggressive on the wrong skin. On most, though, it just reads bright. Bergamot flickers at the edges, barely there, keeping the resinous bulk from becoming claustrophobic. Within the first hour, the galbanum recedes and the opoponax settles into something warmer, sweeter. The fragrance becomes honeyed, resinous, intimate. Labdanum and amber arrive quietly, deepening the warmth without adding weight. This is the heart of the wear, the part that earns the 8 to 10 hour longevity rating. The drydown is sandalwood and residual amber, close to the skin but unmistakably present. On fabric, it lingers into the next day. The evolution isn't dramatic, it's a slow settling, like sediment finding the bottom of a glass. The fragrance that started bright ends warm, and stays.
