The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vigor arrived in 2018 as part of Phuong Dang's evolving exploration of scent as emotional medium, the first in a series titled Eight States of Freedom. Each fragrance in the collection is conceived as a captured feeling, translated into olfactory form through collaboration with French perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. Vigor represents a specific state: the charged stillness before motion, the moment of gathering oneself. Named for that electric wakefulness, it translates dawn energy into aromatic form. The partnership between Dang's artistic vision and Duchaufour's technical precision produced a spicy-sweet extrait that quickly drew press attention and industry recognition, including a FIFI Indie Fragrance of the Year finalist nod.
Vigor distinguishes itself through the unusual convergence of cocktail and aromatic elements. Vermouth in the opening is a confident choice, lending botanical bitterness that bridges citrus and spice with an almost apéritif-like clarity. Caraway and pine in the heart add herbal edges, pushing the composition toward something more complex than the vanilla-and-amber norm. Duchaufour layers nine base notes, including myrrh absolute, oak wood absolute, and Cypriol, creating density without weight.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to the top. Bitter orange and cardamom cut through sharp, lifted by juniper's clarity and softened by pear's pale sweetness. Vermouth brings herbal depth, a botanical warmth that stretches across the opening phase. It announces itself without shouting. As the opening fades, the heart emerges with surprising weight: lavender and clary sage bring aromatic green, while nutmeg and caraway add warmth with a slightly metallic edge. Pine needles thread through, keeping the composition from turning sweet. This is the phase that feels most alive, most awake, the most literal expression of its name. Past the two-hour mark, the base takes over properly. Tonka bean and vanilla arrive creamy, but never cloying, anchored by Haitian vetiver's earthy smoke. Myrrh absolute adds ancient, resinous depth while ambergris and musk create that close-to-skin warmth.
Cultural impact
Vigor arrived in 2018 as part of Phuong Dang's Eight States of Freedom series, featured in German GQ and earning a FIFI Indie Fragrance of the Year finalist spot. The house's positioning in the art-meets-fragrance space placed Vigor in dialogue with a growing audience of fragrance enthusiasts seeking compositions that offer more than conventional appeal. The vermouth-spiced composition carved a distinctive niche through its unusual combination of cocktail-inspired opening and deep, resinous base.
