The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Etude 1.4 is part of a larger study series by Pentalogies, each entry exploring a different sensory territory. The official brand copy describes it as a 'baroque universe: velvets the color of warm honey, intense pigments of a luxurious jungle', a world caught between indolence and hidden danger. Le Goût translates this into scent: the cool lift of eucalyptus and bergamot against warm rum and blackcurrant, honeyed fig, and the salty-sweet accord that makes the whole composition feel alive. Clémentine Humeau built this around tension, aromatic freshness against gourmand sweetness, sweetness against salt, the desirable against the dangerous.
What makes Le Goût distinctive is that salty-sweet accord threading through the entire composition. The honey-forward sweetness could easily tip into cloying territory, but salt, present from the heart through the drydown, keeps it honest. The combination of rum, beeswax, and vanilla creates an almost edible warmth, while labdanum and patchouli ground the sweetness into something resinous and deep. The drydown doesn't just last, it evolves, the chocolate and vanilla lingering like a late-night confession.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and aromatic, eucalyptus opens sharp, rum adds warmth, blackcurrant brings a tart berry lift. Bergamot and lime keep the citrus edge alive for the first 30 minutes or so. Then the honey takes over. Black fig and honey merge into a sticky, sun-warmed sweetness, with cinnamon and saffron adding heat. The salt is the tell, it keeps the sweetness from overwhelming, a counterpoint that makes the honeyed richness work. In the drydown, the honey doesn't disappear. It deepens into beeswax and tonka bean, vanilla and labdanum creating a warm, resinous cream. Chocolate stays close to the skin. Vetiver grounds everything into a warm, intimate linger that outlasts most fragrances, easily a full workday, often into the evening.
Cultural impact
Etude 1.4: Le Goût has found a following among fragrance lovers who appreciate rich, honeyed compositions that push beyond safe territory. The salty-sweet balance and strong longevity have made it a signature scent for those who've fallen for its warmth. It's the kind of fragrance that announces itself, bold enough to turn heads, warm enough to linger in memory.
