The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Paul Smith released Rose Limited Edition 2017 as part of a running series of seasonal rose fragrances, with sibling editions including Rose Summer Edition, Rose Summer Edition 2011, Rose Summer Edition 2012, Summer Edition, Romantic Edition, and Limited Edition. The Rose Limited Edition 2017 stands as one of these special-edition releases, carrying the same restrained sensibility as the mainline Paul Smith Rose but living in a special-edition bottle designed for the season. It is a limited-run edition, composed around Turkish rose, green tea, violet, cedar, and white musk, built on the idea that a single floral can carry an entire composition if treated with care. The 2017 bottle became a collector's piece for those drawn to seasonal variations within a single scent family.
What makes this composition interesting is its restraint. The fragrance works through contrast rather than volume. Green tea opens the composition with a clean, slightly bitter vegetal note, then Turkish rose arrives soft and dewy rather than jammy. Violet powder in the heart creates that cosmetic softness, the smell of face powder and pressed powder compacts settling across the skin. Cedar and white musk at the base keep everything dry and close, anchoring the airy florals in something warmer and more grounded.
The evolution
On skin, the green tea opens with a clean, almost watery lift that lasts about 15-20 minutes. Then Turkish rose and violet step in together, the rose reading fresh and petal-soft rather than syrupy, the violet adding a powdery iris-adjacent sweetness. That phase holds for roughly 2-3 hours, which is the fragrance's most expressive window on skin. By hour four, the cedar and white musk have taken over completely. The rose thins to a memory, the violet powder settles into the musk, and what remains is a clean, slightly woody skin scent. It doesn't transform dramatically across those hours, but it does shrink gracefully, pulling inward rather than expanding. The green tea freshness fades first, leaving the rose as the dominant voice for a stretch, then the cedar warmth rises quietly through the final hours.
Cultural impact
Paul Smith Rose Limited Edition 2017 belongs to a family of rose fragrances built around clarity rather than intensity. Where many rose compositions lean on sweetness, oud, or spice for warmth, this one keeps things powdery, green, and close to the skin. Its green-tea opening sets it apart from creamier or jammier rose compositions, giving the floral a fresh, almost watery start before the violet powder and Turkish rose take over. The accord then drifts down into cedar and white musk, which keep the drydown dry and intimate rather than resinous or syrupy.
