The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Grey Sapphire arrived in 2012, composed by Sidonie Lancesseur for Pascal Morabito. This fragrance pursued something different, a luminous, fruity-gourmand character wrapped in powder. The composition brings together warm fruity top notes with a solar and sweet heart. Heliotrope contributes its cool floral quality, delivering a powdery softness that tempers the richness of vanilla and myrrh. The result balances sweetness with unexpected depth, where each note finds its place without overwhelming the others. It feels cheerful without being naive, soft without being forgettable, offering an elegant interplay between bright fruit and warm, enveloping base notes.
What makes Grey Sapphire distinctive is the licorice blossom in the heart. Aniseed provides a cool counterpoint to the sweetness surrounding it, creating tension rather than adding to the warmth. A faint, herbal coolness prevents the composition from becoming syrupy. The heliotrope amplifies this effect, its powdery almond-like softness bridging the gap between the bright fruit top and the warm gourmand base. As the fragrance settles, sandalwood and musk arrive, creating a skin-close warmth that lingers gently without projecting aggressively, wrapping the wearer in a soft, intimate embrace.
The evolution
The opening is immediately fruity, blackberry and peach tumbling together, their sweetness softened by mandarin's bright citrus edge. This phase transitions as the heart takes over, where heliotrope and jasmine arrive quietly, their powdery creaminess reshaping the brightness into something warmer. The licorice blossom makes its presence known, a cool, faintly bitter undertone that cuts through the sweetness like a shard of star anise in warm milk. As the fragrance develops further, the base notes arrive. Sandalwood and vanilla weave together, their woody-creamy warmth replacing the fruit entirely. Musk and myrrh settle close to the skin, creating a soft, powdery warmth that lingers.
Cultural impact
Grey Sapphire arrived in 2012, bringing a cheerful blend of opening notes with powdery florals and a skin-close vanilla base. The fragrance combines bright fruit notes with edible drydowns, offering a fruity-floral with gourmand undertones. Its character distinguishes it from more conventional offerings, presenting a nuanced take on the fruity-gourmand theme that balances playfulness with sophistication.
