The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Damien Stammers set out to capture the exuberance of a tropical harvest through a vintage lens, launching Pineapple Vintage Intense in 2018 under Parfums Vintage's remit to rewrite classic structures for modern noses. The house, founded in 2016 in the United Kingdom, had already proved its knack for reimagining familiar ingredients with unexpected depth. Stammers brings a background in aromatic chemistry to his compositions, allowing him to balance natural materials with precise structural intent. Pineapple Vintage Intense reflects his interest in pairing bright, accessible opening notes with complex base materials that reward time and attention.
Stammers selected pineapple and apple for their immediate, confident opening because they establish the tropical character without resorting to synthetic-sounding sweetness. The floral heart of rose and jasmine was chosen to bridge the gap between the bright opening and the animalic base, creating a smooth transition that feels cohesive rather than disjointed. Ambergris and musk were essential to the drydown because they provide warmth and depth that vanilla alone cannot sustain over time. Birch and patchouli were added to ground the composition, ensuring the vintage aesthetic comes through as refined rather than merely sweet.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with pineapple and apple, creating an immediate impression of fresh tropical fruit at peak ripeness. Within minutes, rose and jasmine enter the composition, softening the pineapple's boldness and introducing an elegant floral character. Bergamot weaves through the heart, keeping the florals from becoming heavy and adding a citrusy brightness that holds the middle stage for some time. As the drydown arrives, ambergris and musk take over, replacing the fruity brightness with a warm, slightly animalic depth. Vanilla adds a sweet, creamy layer that bridges the transition, while birch provides a dry, woody counterpoint that prevents the base from becoming overly soft. Patchouli grounds everything with an earthy, smoky finish that lingers for hours.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Pineapple Vintage Intense has resonated with a generation seeking nostalgic yet modern scents. By reinterpreting classic fruit accords through a contemporary lens, it sparked renewed interest in vintage-inspired perfumery, influencing indie houses to explore bold pineapple motifs and encouraging collectors to revisit early 2000s fragrance trends. Its cultural footprint extends beyond niche circles, appearing in social media challenges that celebrate tropical freshness, thereby cementing its role as a touchstone for bright, adventurous olfactory expressions.
