The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Electimuss launched Imperium in 2020 as part of its Roman-inspired collection, conceived by perfumer Sofia Bardelli. The name draws from the ancient term for supreme authority, reflecting the brand's fascination with imperial power and its marble-column aesthetic. Imperium was designed to embody the gravitas and grandeur associated with Roman imperial presence, translated into scent through a composition that balances freshness, opulence, and lasting warmth. Sofia Bardelli approached this brief by selecting ingredients that speak to both power and refinement, building from bright opening notes through a commanding floral heart into a deep, resinous base that lingers like the memory of empire.
The note selection for Imperium reflects a deliberate philosophy of layering contrasts. The bright, aromatic opening of coriander and bergamot creates an immediate sense of energy, while the opulent floral heart adds richness and depth. The drydown anchors the fragrance with warm, resinous notes that extend longevity and create a memorable trail. This progression mirrors how imperial power was once experienced: first through bold declarations, then through sustained presence, and finally through lasting legacy. Each note was chosen not only for its individual character but for how it contributes to this broader arc of sensory storytelling.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with coriander and bergamot, a pairing that immediately signals confidence. The coriander brings a green, slightly peppery brightness while bergamot softens the edges with citrus clarity. This opening feels like the first rays of sunlight hitting marble columns, crisp and commanding. As time passes, the heart of lily, rose, tuberose, jasmine, neroli, and saffron blooms fully. The florals are lush and unapologetically rich, with tuberose providing creamy depth and saffron adding an exotic, almost metallic warmth. The neroli introduces a fleeting citrus-floral quality that keeps the heart from feeling heavy. By the time the drydown arrives, the florals have softened but not disappeared. Bourbon vanilla emerges with creamy sweetness, followed by amber, musk, and the deeper notes of patchouli and guaiac wood. A thread of oud weaves through, adding darkness and a resinous, smoky quality that ties the composition together. The final impression is one of lasting warmth and quiet authority.
Cultural impact
Imperium taps into a resurgence of interest in classical themes within modern perfumery, echoing the grandeur of ancient Roman imperial courts while appealing to contemporary consumers who seek narrative depth in their scents. Launched in 2020, it arrived at a time when niche houses were increasingly drawing on historical motifs to differentiate themselves, and its aromatic profile, combining coriander, bergamot, and a rich vanilla‑oud drydown, mirrored the opulent yet disciplined aesthetic of that era. The fragrance quickly became a reference point in online communities, sparking discussions about the balance between power and elegance in scent composition.
