The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says it all: Explore All That is Around You. Parfums Genty built this fragrance around the idea that what surrounds you, the warmth of skin, the memory of fabric, the resinous weight of an autumn evening, belongs in a bottle. Released in 2017, it was designed for the woman who wants complexity without apology, who finds beauty in layers rather than simplicity. The brief was ambitious: eight florals, a warm spiced heart, and a base that could anchor the whole composition without becoming predictable. The result is a fragrance that asks something of the wearer, and rewards accordingly.
What makes this composition unusual isn't any single note, it's the density. Eight heart notes including rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, geranium, iris, lily of the valley, cedar, and patchouli could easily collapse into noise. Instead, the formula uses ambrette at the top as a stabilizing mineral force, something musky and slightly animalic that keeps the florals from blooming into sweetness. The leather base, amplified by benzoin and styrax, gives the florals somewhere to land rather than simply fade. It's structured like a sentence with a strong subject and an even stronger verb.
The evolution
The opening is intimate. Ambrette, caraway, and lavender arrive close to the skin, medicinal at first, almost sharp enough to sting. That phase lasts about an hour. Then the florals take over. Rose and jasmine emerge first, heavy and warm, ylang-ylang adding a tropical sweetness that deepens the air. The cedar and patchouli appear as the florals peak, grounding them with something woody and slightly bitter. By hour three, the base arrives: amber, benzoin, leather. The leather doesn't announce itself, it settles, mixing with sandalwood's cream and styrax's smoke until the whole composition feels like a warm room on a cold night. On fabric, this lasts a full workday. The scent becomes quieter but never disappears.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 launch, Explore All That is Around You has developed a reputation among niche collectors for delivering genuine complexity at a price point that doesn't require compromise. The fragrance occupies a specific space: powdery florals softened by leather and resin, neither purely feminine nor aggressively animalic. Wearers describe it as the kind of scent that invites curiosity rather than compliments, something worn for the wearer rather than the room. It has found a following among those who want oriental warmth without the expected sweetness, and leather without the aggression.
