The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Perfumer Evelyne Boulanger designed Volare Gold for Oriflame in 2017 as a modern interpretation of the rose. Fruity top notes amplify the opening brightness with mandarin and peach, their juicy sweetness lifted by a subtle tartness that keeps the start from feeling heavy. Gardenia and jasmine pad the heart with creaminess, adding texture and a soft floral richness that builds gradually. The salted caramel base grounds everything without becoming heavy, its sweet warmth connecting seamlessly to the woody notes beneath. The overall effect is a rose that feels generous, alive, and unapologetically floral, made for someone who loves the classic note but wants it to feel contemporary.
The combination of salted caramel and rose creates something unexpected. Salt pulls the sweetness toward something more mineral and interesting rather than purely dessert-like, preventing the composition from becoming heavy or cloying. The result sits between floral and gourmand without fully committing to either camp. Ambergris in the base adds depth that many mass-market fragrances overlook, giving the drydown a subtle complexity that rewards attention. The combination feels distinctive, balancing warmth and mineral notes in a way that feels both familiar and fresh.
The evolution
The opening hits like biting into a ripe peach, bright and juicy, with a little tartness from the mandarin. Red apple weaves through the first phase before the florals take over. Gardenia and jasmine arrive together, padding the rose rather than competing with it. The rose itself emerges as the heart of the composition, warm and red, with a subtle powderiness that adds depth. Then the salted caramel announces itself, not as a dessert note but as a bridge, connecting the florals to the sandalwood beneath and sweetening the drydown without overwhelming it. Ambergris keeps everything grounded, adding a faint mineral depth that prevents the base from becoming too warm. The final phase settles into sandalwood and caramel, soft and lingering.
Cultural impact
Volare Gold occupies a sweet spot in Oriflame's rose-heavy collection, offering warmth without the commitment of a full amber fragrance. The salted caramel note adds an unexpected twist that sets it apart from more traditional floral offerings. It's a fragrance that balances accessibility with character, making it suitable for everyday wear while still offering enough complexity to keep you interested.
