The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nishane, the Istanbul-based niche house founded in 2012, has built its reputation on high-concentration extrait formulas designed for longevity and presence. Working exclusively with independent master perfumers, the house pursues bold olfactory statements rooted in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions. For Nanshe, they partnered with Cecile Zarokian, a perfumer known for her ability to balance freshness with depth, giving her a brief that honored the Sumerian goddess of abundance without resorting to literalism. The result is a fragrance that feels both ancient and modern, aquatic without being synthetic, floral without being sweet.
The note selection reflects deliberate contrast: bright yuzu and bergamot against earthy carrot seed, lush florals against aquatic coolness, powdery softness against woody warmth. Cecile Zarokian uses these opposing forces to create tension and resolution, mirroring the duality of abundance itself, both giver and receiver, river and delta. Wearing Nanshe means experiencing this dialogue between freshness and softness, the immediate and the enduring, in a composition that asks nothing of you but presence.
The evolution
Nanshe begins with an unexpected flourish: carrot seed and cardamom grounded by yuzu and bergamot create a citrus opening that surprises with its earthiness. Within minutes, the composition shifts toward its aquatic heart where rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang bloom alongside watery fruits and aquatic notes. The progression feels natural, like a river widening from its source. By the third hour, powdery notes emerge alongside iris, softening everything into a gentle whisper of musk, patchouli, and sandalwood. This evolution rewards patience, revealing new facets over hours rather than minutes.
Cultural impact
Nanshe draws its name from the Mesopotamian goddess who watched over wetlands and abundance, a figure of protection and prosperity in ancient Sumerian belief. The Abundance Collection, to which this scent belongs, represents Nishane's ongoing dialogue with mythology and harvest themes central to Istanbul's historic position as a trade crossroads. In a fragrance landscape crowded with bold, attention-grabbing compositions, Nanshe's powdery-floral intimacy signals a different value proposition: fragrance as personal rather than performative. The 2020 release arrived during a period when many niche enthusiasts sought quieter, more contemplative work that rewards stillness and proximity.
