The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Verônica Kato designed Encontros as part of Natura's Biografia collection, where each fragrance maps a different kind of human connection. Encontros translates as encounters, the unplanned, the serendipitous, the kind of moment that changes the shape of an evening. The brief was simple: build a floral that felt rooted in something real. Not a fantasy garden, not a laboratory approximation of flowers. Something with a sense of place. That place happens to be Brazil, and the botanical Kato reached for to anchor the composition is priprioca, a rhizome native to the Amazon basin that carries an earthy, slightly spicy warmth unlike anything in the standard perfumer's palette. It is, in other words, the opposite of a safe choice. The kind of ingredient that signals a perfumer willing to argue for something unusual.
What makes the structure of Encontros unusual is the relationship between the heart and the base. White florals, rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, follow a familiar path, but they arrive without the usual softening agents. The bergamot and pink pepper opening doesn't coddle them. There's a brightness, a slight edge from the pink pepper, that keeps the florals from settling into sentimentality. Then the priprioca enters the conversation. It doesn't overpower the florals, it undercuts them, adds a mineral-earth dimension that prevents the composition from floating away entirely. Patchouli and amber complete the gesture, wrapping the whole thing in warmth that stays close to the skin for hours.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Bergamot and pink pepper arrive together, the citrus bright and the pepper soft, not a sting, more a suggestion. It lasts maybe twenty minutes before the florals take over, and that transition is where Encontros earns attention. The rose and jasmine don't ambush the citrus. They arrive gradually, threading through it, so the shift feels like a hand-off rather than a cut. The lily of the valley adds a clean-green note that keeps the heart from going heavy. Three to four hours in, the priprioca surfaces. This is the phase that separates Encontros from a standard floral. An earthy, slightly rooty warmth emerges from below the florals, grounded by amber and patchouli into something that reads as intimate rather than loud. On most skin, the drydown holds for another two to three hours, close, warm, present without announcing itself. It doesn't disappear so much as settle into the background of wherever you're standing.
Cultural impact
Natura's Biografia Encontros arrives at a moment when Brazilian perfumery is gaining recognition for its use of native botanicals and its commitment to biodiversity. The fragrance showcases priprioca, a traditional Amazonian ingredient with deep roots in indigenous medicine and perfumery, anchoring the warm, floral composition in something culturally specific. By featuring this botanical, Natura connects contemporary fragrance design with Brazil's heritage of natural ingredients and traditional knowledge.
