The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lys Impérial joined Monkoku's collection in 2025, and the house describes it as a whispered promise of light, blossoms, and gentle sweetness. In the brand's own words, it reads as an olfactory poem, delicate as a silken veil and feminine as a golden morning. That language sets the tone for the entire composition, and the juice inside does its best to honor it. Bergamot lifts the opening with a quick citrus spark, the kind of brightness that arrives and then politely steps aside for what comes next. The heart gathers jasmine and ylang-ylang into something creamy and almost narcotic, the white-flower register doing most of the talking while violet and heliotrope soften the edges with their familiar powdery hush.
The layering in the base gives Lys Impérial its particular pull. Tonka bean rounds the edges with a soft almond sweetness, and vanilla smooths everything into something that feels almost edible without ever crossing into pure sugar. Coconut adds a milky, faintly tropical creaminess that keeps the drydown from going flat, while the milk and sugar notes push the scent into warm, almost-baked territory. Cocoa powder grounds all that sweetness with something faintly bitter, the way a dusting of cocoa pulls a dessert back from the edge.
The evolution
Bergamot opens bright and brief, cutting through the air like sunlight finding a window. Jasmine and ylang-ylang take over soon after, creamy and indolic in a way that signals skin rather than soap. The opening feels almost dewy, with the bergamot's green-edged tail still lingering at the edges. The violet, heliotrope, and pear settle in as the composition warms, and the scent shifts from luminous to soft-focus, the white florals receding into something more intimate and hushed. The peach adds a bruised sweetness that keeps it from reading too powdery, lending the heart a fruit-ripened warmth. The gourmand base fully arrives in the later hours, with tonka bean rounding the edges and vanilla smoothing everything into a continuous soft warmth. Coconut adds a faintly tropical creaminess, and the milk and sugar notes push the scent into warm, almost-baked territory.
Cultural impact
Lys Impérial sits within Monkoku's 2025 collection, and wears as a soft, intimate scent that reads close to the skin, the kind of fragrance someone keeps rather than performs. The composition holds its own ground within the brand's wider catalog, a powdery-floral offering alongside the house's gourmand and floral releases, including fragrances like Cognac & Cinnamon Spice and Dark Syrup. Its particular appeal lies in how it handles sweetness, offering the warmth of vanilla, tonka, and coconut without tipping into the heavier, syrupier territory that some gourmand compositions occupy.
