Why it exists.
The beginning
Aşk-ı Lâl joined Monkoku's debut collection in 2025, arriving alongside the brand's first wave of compositions. The name carries a romantic weight in Turkish, and even before a single note is smelled, the emotional register feels set. The official description anchors it in saffron and jasmine at the top, a heart of strawberry, orange blossom, rose leaf, and amber, and a base of sandalwood, vanilla, and powdery talc. From the opening spray, the saffron announces itself with that familiar leathery, almost metallic warmth, a thread of spice that pulls you in rather than pushing outward. The jasmine folds in almost immediately, indolic and creamy, and together with the saffron it creates a dense, slightly dizzying sweetness that feels closer to incense than to a typical floral perfume.
What makes the composition interesting is how the top and heart notes argue against each other before finding equilibrium. Saffron brings a leathery, almost bitter heat, and jasmine contributes a narcotic indolic sweetness, while strawberry offers a bright, almost candy-like fruit note that could easily tip the whole thing into juvenile territory. The strawberry and saffron end up in constant conversation, the fruit trying to lift the composition into bright, sugary territory while the saffron keeps pulling it back down to earth with its dusty, leathery grip.
The evolution
The opening hits with saffron's warm bitterness first, almost immediately undercut by jasmine's indolic sweetness, a combination that reads as opulent and slightly heady. The saffron doesn't vanish as the heart develops; instead it threads through everything that follows, giving the later notes a spiced, almost jam-like quality rather than fresh brightness. Strawberry enters early in the heart, bright and unmistakable, and it stays present longer than most fruit notes do, anchored to the skin by saffron's grip. Orange blossom and rose leaf emerge in the background, adding a green-floral lift that keeps the sweetness from becoming flat. The rose leaf contributes a slightly bitter, stem-like edge that prevents the strawberry and orange blossom from collapsing into pure sugar. Amber eventually takes over as the heart fades, warming everything up and pulling the composition toward its base.
Cultural impact
Aşk-ı Lâl has drawn comparisons to other saffron-and-fruit-forward compositions in the niche space, with Parfumo listing Anfas fragrances like Ishq and Ishq Special as similar releases. These are not direct comparisons but rather references for wearers who enjoy the sweet-spicy balance that saffron and strawberry create together. The vegan formulation and unisex positioning make it accessible to a broad audience within the niche space, allowing it to reach wearers who might otherwise avoid more traditionally gendered or animal-derived compositions.
