The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Musk Elixir arrived in 2022, part of Massimo Dutti's ongoing exploration of the modern musk category. The brand built its reputation on quiet confidence and timeless tailoring, and its fragrance line carries that same philosophy. This particular release zeroes in on one of perfumery's most enduring materials: white musk. The nose behind the composition is Hamid Merati-Kashani. His brief here was simple but specific. Build a fragrance around white musk's crystalline texture and let the supporting cast serve that central character without competing for attention. The result is a composition that knows its priorities from the outset. White musk isn't just one note among many; it's the architecture the entire fragrance is built around.
What makes this composition structurally interesting is the tension between the thuja opening and the musky base. Thuja, sometimes called arborvitae, brings a sharp, coniferous-green quality that reads almost medicinal in the first few minutes. Ylang-ylang, placed in the heart, softens that sharpness with its dense, tropical-floral sweetness. The base is where the composition commits to its identity. White musk provides that clean, skin-like quality. Patchouli adds depth without going dark. Ambroxan gives the drydown its mineral, slightly amber-warm glow. The result is a fragrance that moves from green to floral to clean warmth in three distinct phases.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong entirely to thuja. It's sharp, green, and slightly resinous, like crushed cedar leaves on a damp morning. Some wearers find this opening bracing; others find it a little challenging. Either way, it doesn't linger long in that register. Around the fifteen-minute mark, ylang-ylang steps forward. The green sharpness softens into something rounder and more honeyed, the tropical floral adding a creamy density to what was a lean opening. This is where the fragrance starts to feel like skin rather than air. By the hour mark, the base is fully in charge. White musk carries the composition, clean and intimate. The ylang-ylang's sweetness has mellowed into a soft, almost buttery undertone that continues to weave through the later stages, lending a quiet warmth to the drydown.
Cultural impact
Musk Elixir sits in an interesting space in the broader fragrance landscape. The composition is straightforward, built around materials that do their job without demanding attention. That quietness gives it a particular kind of presence, the sort of scent that registers as warmth and composure rather than as performance. The thuja opening gives the fragrance a distinguishing edge. It's sharp, green, and slightly resinous, offering something more distinctive than the standard clean musk template. For the wearer, it's a scent that reads as put-together without trying, the olfactory equivalent of a well-fitted coat.
