Why it exists.
The beginning
Massimo Dutti launched Black Evening in 2021 with Givaudan behind the composition, building on the idea of exploring leather's more nuanced character. Osmanthus, a small, apricot-sweet flower, was chosen as the counterweight to leather's natural assertiveness. The result is a trinity: osmanthus opens with delicate floral sweetness, saffron brings warm, slightly metallic depth, and leather anchors the composition with its signature richness. Each note does a specific job, creating a fragrance where the floral and spice elements interact with the base to produce something that feels both refined and present.
The osmanthus-saffron-leather combination is unusual because osmanthus is delicate and leather is not. Osmanthus brings apricot-blossom sweetness that tempers the leather's boldness, while the saffron introduces a metallic, slightly medicinal heat that bridges the two very different characters.
