The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Matcha & Musk was born in 2025 from the mind of Grégoire Balleydier, tasked by Massimo Dutti to translate the brand's quiet elegance into a scent that feels both fresh and grounded. Inspired by the ritual of Japanese matcha, the perfumer paired the tea's verdant green with a subtle musk, aiming for something that feels both modern and timeless. The brief asked for sophistication without ornamentation, a fragrance that respects space rather than fills it.
The note selection reflects a deliberate commitment to restraint. Green tea provides the aromatic foundation, its vegetal freshness anchoring the composition. Ambrette delivers the musk character with a clarity that avoids the heavy, animalic qualities sometimes associated with musk notes. Iris adds subtle floral complexity that prevents the fragrance from feeling flat while maintaining the overall sense of refinement. Bergamot and pink pepper function as supporting elements, brightening and adding gentle warmth without drawing attention away from the core notes. The result is a fragrance designed to be present without demanding notice, reflecting the quiet sophistication that defines Massimo Dutti.
The evolution
The composition begins with bergamot and green tea establishing the scent's character, the citrus bringing immediate clarity while the tea provides its distinctive fresh, slightly astringent quality. Pink pepper adds a gentle spark that keeps the opening from feeling static. As the fragrance evolves, green tea deepens and ambrette takes prominence, introducing its clean, natural musk quality that feels modern rather than vintage. Iris brings a soft floral dimension, its powdery character adding warmth without sweetness. The heart holds tog ether gracefully, the elements blending without sharp transitions. With no separate drydown notes, the composition simply softens, ambrette and iris lingering in a quiet fade that remains close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, Matcha & Musk has been embraced by fans of subtle yet distinctive scents, often praised for its fresh green tea vibe that feels modern without shouting. Wearers note its ability to complement both casual and business attire, positioning it as a versatile staple in the house’s growing portfolio of understated fragrances.
