Leather Mirage

The composition leans into an Oriental tradition through its choices rather than its clichés. Coffee and cacao do the heavy lifting where sweetness might otherwise dominate, giving the fragrance a bitter, roasted backbone that feels substantial rather than indulgent. Saffron at the opening adds a thread of leathery spice before the tobacco and incense move in, and that saffron has a slightly metallic, almost papery edge to it, like saffron threads crumbling between your fingers.

The evolution

The first thirty minutes belong to coffee, sharp and almost espresso-like, with saffron threading underneath. The saffron at this stage has a leathery, slightly waxy character, like the inside of a new wallet, and it weaves in and out of the coffee's bitterness, sometimes hiding, sometimes surfacing. The tobacco arrives before the coffee fully fades, and they overlap in a way that smells like a lit cigarette in a wood-paneled room, not ash but warmth. There's a dry, cured-leaf quality to the tobacco that prevents it from ever smelling like smoke, and the incense underneath adds a faintly resinous sweetness, like frankincense left over from a ceremony the day before. By the two-hour mark, the leather has settled in and the composition reads as one cohesive texture, the roasted coffee now indistinguishable from the tobacco.
