The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2008, Mark Buxton released Sounds & Visions as part of the Metamorphoses of Colours and Moods collection. The collection explored connections between different sensory experiences and emotional states. The name Sounds & Visions suggests a crossing of the senses, drawing on the concept of synesthesia where one sense might evoke another. Buxton's approach draws from multiple disciplines, finding inspiration beyond traditional perfumery to create something that engages perception in an unusual way.
The opening combines cardamom and black pepper with mandarin orange and bergamot. Brazilian rosewood leads the heart, with nutmeg and jasmine underneath. The base features guaiac wood, cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli, with rose adding warmth. The composition balances brightness with depth, moving from a fresh, spice-tinged start through a richer middle section to a grounded, slightly earthy drydown. Rosewood brings a distinctive quality to the heart, while the woods anchor the base without overwhelming the overall structure.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately, bergamot, mandarin, ginger, pepper. Within ten minutes the cardamom emerges and softens everything, adding warmth without sweetness. This is the transition phase, where the fragrance shifts from its initial brightness into something more layered. The heart arrives with Brazilian rosewood leading, alongside nutmeg and jasmine. The rose is present but sits beneath the surface, providing a quiet softness that supports the overall composition. By the second hour the woods have settled: sandalwood and cedar forming a dry, slightly resinous base that holds the patchouli close to skin. Moderate sillage throughout. It doesn't announce itself, it accompanies. The woody drydown is where it lives longest, lasting well into the later hours on most skin types.
Cultural impact
Sounds & Visions arrived in 2008 as part of Buxton's Metamorphoses collection, a series that explored how different sensory and emotional experiences might translate into fragrance. The collection included Wood & Absinth, Black Angel, Hot Leather, English Breakfast, Around Midnight, and others. Sounds & Visions stands out within that framework for its particular attention to how the senses might interplay.
