The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vendetta arrived in 2024 from Marc Gebauer, the house that has earned notice for compositions with teeth. Composed by Luca Maffei, this fragrance carries a deliberate tension that runs through every layer. The name itself, Vendetta, signals intent. This is not a wallflower composition. It announces itself, sets terms, and waits for the wearer to decide what to do with the attention. Maffei built it around a metallic spine, running cold through every phase of the scent's life on skin. That iron note, unusual in mainstream masculine perfumery, gives the composition its bite and its backbone. Around it, a bright citrus opening of lemon and orange gives way to saffron's burn, setting up a transition into lavender, orange blossom, and clary sage that softens without surrendering.
The most interesting choice here is the metallic note appearing twice in the pyramid, bookending the composition like structural steel. Vendetta makes its skeleton visible, then drapes aromatic warmth over it. The saffron and clove opening leans hot, almost culinary, while the oud and oakmoss drydown pulls toward something earthier and older. That interplay between cold metal and warm spice defines the composition's character. The metallic note in the opening reads almost industrial, a flash of cold before the spices catch up.
The evolution
The opening arrives without ceremony. Metallic notes flash alongside clove and saffron, with lemon cutting through like voltage. There's nothing tentative about it. The first impression is sharp, almost electric, a cold metallic note tangled with warm spice and bright citrus that hits all at once rather than in sequence. As the composition warms on skin, the citrus recedes and the heart takes over. Orange blossom and lavender soften the metallic bite, but don't erase it. Clary sage adds an herbal, slightly camphorated layer that keeps things from going sweet. This is the phase where the fragrance settles into its rhythm, the metal now reading as warmth rather than cold, the florals doing quiet work in the background. In the later stages, the base takes command. Oud arrives quietly, wrapped in oakmoss and amber, with vetiver grounding everything.
Cultural impact
Vendetta has attracted attention from collectors drawn to fragrances that operate outside conventional masculine structures. The metallic-spice profile sets it apart, an opening built around iron and saffron rather than the usual citrus-and-woods template. That combination gives the composition a presence that registers in a room, a weight that comes from the base materials rather than from concentration alone. The fragrance appeals to wearers who want something with an edge, a scent that says something specific about the person wearing it.
