The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Berserker launched in 2023 under Marc Gebauer's fragrance house, with its composition credited to Christian Carbonnel. The name itself draws from the Norse warrior archetype, signaling an intent rooted in something primal, masculine, and unapologetically direct. The note structure backs this up from the very first spray, with frankincense elevated to a structural role across the pyramid, an unusual choice that anchors the composition rather than simply accenting it. Where many compositions treat frankincense as a passing bridge between brighter top notes and heavier base materials, Berserker builds the entire architecture around the resin, letting it carry weight through every phase.
What makes Berserker read differently from many incense-driven fragrances is that frankincense runs through all three phases of the composition rather than living only in the heart. In most smoky-resinous builds, frankincense appears briefly, used as a transitional bridge or a quiet accent, then the drydown shifts toward amber, oud, or woods that take over the base. Here, frankincense threads through the opening, the heart, and the base, which changes how the fragrance reads structurally. The smoke in the mid-phase reads as a deliberate effect rather than a byproduct of the incense material.
The evolution
The eucalyptus and bergamot do their work in the first 15 to 20 minutes, sharp and almost camphorated, pulling the air a bit clinical before the warmth pushes in. There's a mentholated coolness that sits high on the skin at first, almost like the chill of mint without the sweetness, and the bergamot adds a slight citric bitterness that keeps the opening from feeling too clean. Frankincense and pink pepper build right behind them, and that's when the character starts to read. The pepper adds a dry, papery heat that crackles against the cooler top notes, and the frankincense starts to unfold in a way that feels less like church incense and more like resin warming on hot metal. The smoke note arrives somewhere around the 45-minute mark, not as an aromatic chemical but as the impression of something just extinguished, a fireplace or a blown-out match, drifting through cedar and patchouli.
Cultural impact
Berserker occupies a specific place in the resin-forward niche landscape, with its frankincense-led structure placing it in conversation with other incense and smoke-driven compositions. The fragrance reads as a serious, material-focused scent rather than a casual wear, and that positioning shapes who reaches for it and when. The opening's cold, sharp character makes it feel suited to cooler weather, where the eucalyptus and camphorated top notes won't feel out of place against the air. The smoky, resinous heart lends itself to evening wear, moments where a heavier scent profile fits the context.
